When it comes to tourism in a country as diverse as South Africa, it is challenging to narrow down which attractions to see. For history enthusiasts, there are ancient wonders and historically significant sites to explore. For food lovers, exceptional dining options abound. There are also natural gems, cultural activities, and profoundly meaningful socio-political sites throughout our nine provinces. Below is a list of the top five tourist attractions to start with, and we have hotels within easy access of them all.
Blyde River Canyon
This natural wonder is a perfect starting point to explore. As the second largest canyon in Africa, trailing only the Fish River Canyon in Namibia, Blyde River Canyon boasts lush subtropical foliage setting it apart from its neighbour. This verdant landscape creates stunning hiking opportunities through the diverse flora and fauna of the area. Keep an eye out for all five of South Africa's primates - samango and vervet monkeys, baboons, and nocturnal greater and lesser bushbabies - as well as hippos and crocodiles near the waterline. As with many ancient geological formations, Blyde River Canyon is somewhat isolated, so it is advisable to dedicate a day to your visit, including the drive. We recommend using Town Lodge Polokwane as your base.
Cape Winelands
The Western Cape is home to some of the most famous wine farms in the world, making it an ideal destination for fans of all things grape related. You will find both scenic beauty and culinary delights, and you don't have to be a wine connoisseur to appreciate it. The region comprises smaller towns such as Stellenbosch, Paarl, Montagu, and Franschhoek, each offering a unique and vibrant history. Start your journey at City Lodge Pinelands or Town Lodge Bellville for a short drive to Stellenbosch and then on to the next wine estate, or book one of the many wine tours offered in the region.
Victoria and Alfred Waterfront
Continuing our exploration of the Cape, the Victoria and Alfred Waterfront, commonly referred to as the V&A, is a bustling hub of activity. This vibrant area on the Atlantic coastline offers breathtaking sunset views with the backdrop of Table Mountain and regular seal sightings. It features a range of dining, shopping and entertainment options, and best of all, when you stay at City Lodge Hotel Victoria and Alfred Waterfront you are a short walk away.
Knysna and George
The Garden Route is widely regarded as one of the most beautiful road trips you can undertake, winding along South Africa’s south-eastern coastline. Knysna and George along the route make for fascinating destinations, each with its own charm, and offering activities such as visiting an elephant park, stunning natural attractions, lush golf courses, and picturesque beachfront views. If you are looking for a place to rest during your travels, look no further than Town Lodge George.
Durban and Umhlanga Beachfront
Durban, Umhlanga and the ocean go hand in hand. These are popular destinations, especially during the holidays, and should certainly be added to your itinerary. While you are at it, book a stay at one of our five hotels in the area: City Lodge Hotel Durban, City Lodge Hotel Umhlanga Ridge, Town Lodge Umhlanga, Road Lodge Durban, and Road Lodge Umhlanga Ridge.
This list only scratches the surface of what South Africa has to offer. One thing is certain: wherever your travels take you, there will always be a City Lodge Hotels property nearby to welcome you after a long journey and serve as the starting point for your next adventure.
