Edenvale teens launch entrepreneurs club

Two young entrepreneurs from Edenvale have launched a business to empower youth to secure their financial futures and gain a basic understanding of investments.

Logan Walker (16) and Ethan Smith (17) from Jeppe High School for Boys recently launched their business, the Young Entrepreneur Club (YEC).

Ethan explained that the YEC teaches youth how to invest and manage their money through a series of interactive games and events, while providing them with information through webinars and in-person discussions with guest speakers.

“There are so many children in SA who have the potential to start a business; they just might need some information or help.

“The future of SA starts with us,” said Ethan.

Logan said that by starting this, the YEC duo hopes not only to provide opportunities to others but also to share information from experts and learn.

Although Logan and Ethan have only hosted one event so far, the plan is to host another in July once school exams are finished.

Once the initiative is up and running, Ethan and Logan intend to host several sportspersons, hopefully from the Golden Lions, to speak to the youth about being financially wise with their money and any investments.

The duo explained that the idea for the business arose after speaking with Logan’s father, Andrew Walker, about their shared passion for the future.

After discussing their goals and passions, a plan was set, and the two teens began devising a way forward. Their first event was held at the City Lodge near Barbara Road.

Each month, Ethan and Logan will host one in-person event, one webinar event, and one online event.
When asked if many of their peers had started their own businesses, both Ethan and Logan said no.
“Its very rare to see young people starting their own business.

“Some might sell snacks, sweets or chips at school,” said Logan.

However, Ethan reminded young entrepreneurs that they do not need much to start their own business.
“You can start small and grow from there.

“With each step you grow, you reinvest in your business,” said Logan.
