From Pretoria to Cape Town in an EV
11 January 2026: Pretorian Johan Kasselman and his wife have recently proven that it is possible to cover a large part of the country in South Africa’s most affordable electric vehicle (EV) — the BYD Dolphin Surf.
Many South Africans are unaware that South Africa already has an extensive public EV charging network with 400 to 500 stations between GridCars, Rubicon, Chargify, and Zero Carbon Charge.
While a large proportion of these charging points are concentrated in major cities, some are strategically located along major highways, including the N1, N2, N3, and N4.
Kasselman and his wife went on an 18-day, 4,500km holiday trip from Pretoria to Cape Town via Mossel Bay in early December 2025.
Writer Hanno Labuschagne lists City Lodge Hotel Bloemfontein as one of 17 chargers they used during their two-and-a-half-week journey.
