Montecasino better be ready, because Gregory Porter is bringing the heat when he hits the stage in Johannesburg later this month. While he’s known throughout the jazz-loving community in Mzansi, this will be Gregory Porter’s first time coming to play a show in South Africa. Let’s take a look at his claim to fame, find out more about his live concerts in Johannesburg and Cape Town, and explore great accommodation options close to the shows:

 Gregory Porter’s claim to fame

Gregory Porter was born in 1971 in Sacramento, California. His attention was first given to sport, American football specifically, but after a severe injury left him unable to continue pursuing a sporting career, he crossed over to his second big love in his life – jazz music.

In 2014 Gregory Porter released an album titled Liquid Spirit, winning the Grammy that year for Best Jazz Vocal Album. Then, three years later, Porter released Take Me to the Alley, which landed him another Grammy for Best Jazz Vocal Album.

In June 2022, Gregory Porter accompanied the London Community Gospel Choir and sang a specially composed song for the lighting of The Queen’s Platinum Jubilee Beacons.

Gregory Porter is coming to South Africa

Considered one of the greatest voices of our generation, Gregory Porter is coming to South Africa for his first-ever solo musical tour in Mzansi. ‘An Intimate Evening with Gregory Porter’ will kick off at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens in Cape Town on 21 January, then moving to Montecasino’s Teatro from 23 – 28 January.

We’re calling on all Joburg-based jazz lovers not to miss this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity, to see one of the planet’s best jazz musicians in his natural habitat – on stage delivering a setlist of award-winning hits. And if you’re traveling from outside of Johannesburg, we know a fantastic place to spend the night close to Montecasino’s Teatro.
