When City Lodge Hotel Group found out what a keen traveller Hildegarde Koen, the voice behind the Suzy Q-Tip blog, was we quickly reached out to her to join in our City Escapes campaign. “I have always loved exploring small towns and as well as big cities. When my husband (then boyfriend) and I were at university we would always go away on camping holidays and explore parts of South Africa. I was super excited when City Lodge Hotel Group contacted me* and asked if I would like to be a tourist in my own city.”   What we didn’t know when we sent her to Courtyard Hotel Arcadia for the weekend, was that upon moving to Pretoria East four years ago, it was one of the areas she had been warned against. So in actual fact, she had never explored this great area within her own city! We were happy to help. “As I live in Pretoria East,…

Whether the festive fun has left you with a couple of extra kilos, or a significantly smaller bank balance, we’ve got some brilliant tips to get you on the right track for an adventurous year ahead. Don’t let those overindulgences get in the way of your exploration in 2015! KEEP IT SHORT, SIMPLE AND DOABLE Whatever your goal, break it down into its simplest form – to ensure that you have the best chance possible of achieving it. If you want to lose weight, then don’t set yourself an unrealistic goal of only eating salads for the next month. A better option is to slowly start changing your habits – have the veg or salad option instead of chips with meals, swap out greasy junk food snacks for baked fat free options, and switch to the healthy version wherever you can. Often it’s more of a mental block than anything…

Uresha from Fonts & Frosting recently joined the City Lodge City Escape bus and took us up on a staycation at Courtyard Hotel Sandton. “As we walked into the reception area at the Courtyard Hotel Sandton, we were greeted by warm smiles and a friendly hello. “Would you like something to drink?” A pitcher of lemonade stood enticingly to our left. After our bustling morning, we were delighted at the offer. Mr C was eager to get to our room so I had to down my glass and follow suit. Once inside, we were taken aback at the size of the room. It was much larger than some of the hotels we’ve stayed in. The giant private balcony made complete with a wrought iron table and two chairs made me wish I had brought a book.” A LIFE OF LUXURY ON YOUR DOORSTEP “I unpacked my stuff only to realise that I had…

Is travelling a big part of your job? Then we say you should make the most of it! Just because you find yourself somewhere for business, doesn’t mean you should stop exploring. Even on short trips, you can experience a little something about what makes that place tick – and we want to help you do it with these tips.  1.     FOLLOW YOUR INTERESTS Don’t force yourself to do the normal tourist activities of a certain place if they don’t interest you – you’ll just be wasting your time, rather than enjoying it. Instead, seek out the local versions of things you love. If you are a foodie, then make a point of visiting a local restaurant, food cart or café that seems interesting. If food doesn’t really faze you, then it could a museum or similar that’s your thing, just tailor your visit to you and not to what…

Today, 16th October, is World Food Day – a day to acknowledge the lack of available resources around the globe, as well as a call to try and change this fact. City Lodge Hotel Group joined Food & Trees for Africa in visiting Mother Touch Academy to help plant vegetables and fruit trees for the community. Mother Touch provides care and pre-schooling for 132 neighbourhood children from under one year up to six years old and runs its own sustainable vegetable garden to assist in feeding the children. ON-GOING SUPPORT City Lodge’s Peter Schoeman and Food & Trees for Africa’s Funboy Sebele celebrate World Food Day! Tasneem Thomas recently came to stay with us at Road Lodge Cape Town International Airport (Road Lodge CTIA), a hotel that she declared “all sorts of amazing!” Tasneem, or Tazz for short, is a Capetonian and avid blogger on her popular site City Girl Vibe. She loves her city, so we asked her to join the ranks of our Travel Bloggers and write about her adventures in Cape Town while staying with us. Tazz, along with her aunt who was on holiday from Dubai, spent a night with us at Road Lodge CTIA during the month of August and the two of them, with Tazz as tour guide, did some whirlwind exploring of the city. The team from the popular tourism site 5 Star Durban, recently visited us at City Lodge Hotel Umhlanga after having happily accepted the challenge of becoming tourists in their own city. And what good tourists they turned out to be, fitting in a ride on the Ricksha along with a trip up the Moses Mabhida Arch, a shop and dinner at Gateway, and more! Here is what Meredith, Relationship Manager for 5 Star Durban had to say about Durban’s touristy highlights. DURBAN’S RICKSHA BUS TOUR “We started our morning off with a stroll down North Beach, taking in the sights and sounds of the Beachfront. Then on to the Tourism Information Centre, where we knew we’d catch the well-known, and loved, Ricksha Bus. It is something that neither of us had ever done before, and it was probably the most fun I have ever had on a bus in my life! We were treated…
