Do you tend to avoid the Mother City during South Africa’s “cooler” months? Scared that the infamously strong wind will blow away your sunglasses and cheery attitude as you walk off the plane?
We’d like to paint a very different picture for you… of a Cape Town ready to welcome you in with the perfect activities to fill your days and surprisingly warm waters.
REASON #5: THE WHALE WATCHING
Since July to September is prime calving season for the whales, they will be out in a flurry. Take a scenic drive along False Bay or to Hermanus and take in the beauty. You should be able to make a few sightings from the shore, but for the ultimate experience, hire out a boat or kayak to get up close.
Not quite in the winter months, but there’s also the annual Hermanus Whale Festival at the end of September, with performances and stores selling unique goods, so if you’re planning a trip around then, be sure to take in this amazing event celebrating nature.
REASON #4: THE BEACH
This is no joke – Capetonians will attest to the fact that winter welcomes larger waves, warmer sea temperatures and ideal wind conditions to make adventure sports such as surfing or wind surfing the biggest thrill. Choose a clear winter’s day in Cape Town and step outside because adventure awaits in superb conditions.
REASON #3: THE RESTAURANTS ARE READY FOR YOU
One of Cape Town’s main attractions is of course the wide range of cuisine available to locals and tourists. Too cold during winter to sit out at a street café? Get a taste of the city at one of Cape Town’s indoor markets, like the popular City Bowl Market.
And for the evenings, choose one of the many cosy restaurants with fireplaces crackling and ready to warm you up.
REASON #2: NATURE IN FULL BLOOM
Rather than giving into the traditional dark, dry and dreary colours of winter, Cape Town’s greenery comes alive in the crisp fresh air! It’s the perfect time to take a hike or mountain bike ride in the calm beauty of Table Mountain and its surrounds, and towards the end of winter is when all the wildflowers start blooming to welcome in spring. Visit the South African Floral Region, an official UNESCO World Heritage Site, for the breath-taking view of hectares upon hectares of pink, orange and yellow blossoms.
REASON #1: OUT OF SEASON PRICES
Not only will you be avoiding the crowds of tourists by going in the off-season, but all the high demand prices fall away as well. Off-season specials mean that you can stay for longer and experience more.
We know what we’re talking about here, with our current Cape Town Hotel deals.
Have we convinced you? Cuddle up and enjoy our freshest months in the warm embrace of the Mother City!
