Whether you’ve been there before, or you’ve just heard about it, there’s no denying that the Garden Route is simply spectacular! Nestled between Port Elizabeth and Cape Town this scenic destination is perfect for a relaxed road trip or some adventurous exploring!

A haven for bird lovers and for friends of the forest, the Garden Route is definitely a picturesque setting for a beautiful holiday. Not to be overlooked though are its secluded little towns that offer a wealth of activities and effortless beauty. So, we’ve rounded up some things to do and see as you get into the spirit of spring along the Garden Route.

FEEL AT HOME

If you make the central town, George, your base during your stay, make the George Town Lodge your home away from home. It is conveniently situated on Knysna Road and easily accessible as you explore the surroundings. This charming, laid-back town has an incredible mountainous setting, which offers amazing hiking trails. You might be in the mood for something a lot lighter, though, and that’s fine because George boasts lovely beaches and golf courses. So, go ahead and bask in the sun, while getting a hole-in-one, on these world-class golf courses and exquisite beaches.

FAMILY FUN JUST A FERRY AWAY

While on your escapades, spend the day in Knysna and see why it’s South Africa’s favourite holiday destination. Take the ferry to the Featherbed Nature Reserve and walk on its cliff top paths, taking in the scenery and fresh air. This guided walk will give you a wealth of info and take your breath away with views simply out of this world! Make a meal of your trip with the delicious buffet lunch before you take the ferry back and fill up on good vibes and good food! If you’re in the mood for a more laid-back activity why not gather the family around for a picnic at the Grootdrai Picnic Site and enjoy the peace and tranquillity of the area.

A BIRD’S EYE VIEW

5957410296_acec370a7a_bIf you’re looking for some fun in the sun (and sea) head over to “Plett”, short for Plettenberg Bay, for a family friendly seaside holiday! It’s the perfect beach town with a balance of sun, sand and sea, which your little ones are sure to love. Take a break from the swimming to see some dolphins and whales while boat riding, or walk through Birds of Eden forest and witness the largest free flight aviary in the world with your own eyes. So, whether you love animals, the outdoors, or the beach you’re sure to find something to float your boat at the Bay!

SEE WHAT LIES UNDERNEATH

Although Oudtshoorn is separated from the Garden Route by a mountain range, it still falls under the must-see destinations to visit when exploring this part of the world. The beautifully scenic Garden Route drive leads to Oudtshoorn – famous for being ostrich capital! There are several ostrich farms where you don’t only learn about the birds but where you can also ride one, if you’re feeling adventurous. Even more fascinating, however, has to be the Cango Caves. Be completely awe-struck by this underground world, with hidden chambers, as you weave between the stalagmites and stalactites in the dark. Your trip just wouldn’t be complete without taking the plunge into Africa’s largest cave and then living to tell the tale.

This is just the tip of the iceberg, though! There is so much more to do and see on the Garden Route, so many gems to find and countless memories to make! So take a drive along the coastline, stop along the way – whether you see something interesting or you just want to breathe in the fresh air – and say hello to spring the natural way; the Garden Route way!
