Travelling overseas can be both very exciting and a bit daunting. First time travellers often find themselves asking questions such as, “what can I take in my bags?” “can I bring my hairdryer?” and “what do I do with my laundry?”

Whether you’re going on a business trip, or going on holiday, our tips for the first time traveller will help you prepare for your journey ahead:

LIQUIDS LIMITATIONS:

It’s important to remember that international flights have strict luggage restrictions. Most airlines don’t allow passengers to carry more than 2ℓ of liquids, gels, creams or aerosols in their luggage.

One way to ensure that you don’t exceed this restriction is to use travel size kits. These kits allow you to decant small amounts of liquids, gels and creams, allowing you to take your favourite products with you without having to pack a 500mℓ bottle.

HAIRDRYERS AND STRAIGHTENERS:

Thankfully, most airlines allow hairdryers and straighteners. Travel sized hairdryers and straighteners are easy to find. They’re light-weight and compact, which means more space in your bag. Investing in travel sized equipment will also help you avoid forking out extra money because your baggage is over the weight limit.

We also suggest investing in a universal plug. Depending on where you’re travelling, most countries have different plug points, a universal plug will ensure you can use your hairdryer or straightener anywhere.

SORTING OUT LAUNDRY:

Not knowing what to do with your laundry is something that often causes a lot of stress, especially if your travels last longer than a week.

If your hotel doesn’t have a laundry service, you can find a nearby laundromat. Laundromats are often quick and convenient.

Alternatively, you can buy washing liquid for clothes. These liquids are designed for travellers. They allow you to wash your clothing by hand in your hotel bathrooms. This may seem like hard work but doing your own washing is a good way to make sure your clothes don’t get lost or damaged.

If you are concerned about plug points, baggage limitations or your laundry, phone your hotel and ask about their facilities. Perhaps you can even leave some of your toiletries behind and buy them when you get there.

The important thing to remember when travelling is to have fun and enjoy the experience. The best thing about travelling abroad for the first time is that everything is new and exciting, embrace it and focus on making wonderful new memories.
