The Western Cape has it all! From golden beaches to rugged mountains and everything in between. Luckily, a lot of these amazing places can be reached by jumping in the car and having a road trip. We love exploring The Cape along all the highways and dirt roads that connect the province. Here are a few of our favourite road trips that offer incredible experiences for those wanting a bit of adventure.

Cape Town Road Trip

CHAPMAN’S PEAK ROAD TRIP

It’s world-famous and for a reason. Driving Chapman’s Peak will give you the chance to experience unforgettable views of the Atlantic Ocean, sunsets that would make any moment special and you might even see a few baboons along the way.

The winding road is squeezed between the chilly waters of the Cape coast and the rugged mountains that have made Cape Town iconic. Only a short drive from Cape Town, this is a great start to your road tripping career and will be sure to inspire you to get out and explore more.

Cape Point

CAPE POINT

Now that you’re familiar with Chapman’s Peak why not look at a longer trip? The next step for any aspiring adventurers would have to be a road trip to Cape Point. Perched on the very tip of a dramatic cliff, Cape Point has been an attractive destination for locals and tourists alike.

Only 70 km away from Cape Town, this road trip is perfect for a day trip out of the city. If you really want to pack in the epic views, plan your route to go via Chapman’s Peak.

Winelands

ROUTE 62

Boasting the title of the world’s longest wine route, Route 62 is all about wine farms, fresh air and rustic charm. Stretching across the Western Cape this scenic drive is 850 km long and should be split into a few days drive to ensure you’re not driving while you’re tired.

Popular spots to visit while you’re road tripping are:

  • Montagu for its thermal baths and fruit trees.
  • Barrydale for its beauty and charm.
  • Oudtshoorn for its famous ostrich farms.

Western Cape Road Trip

THE GARDEN ROUTE

It’s not called the Garden Route for nothing. This lush area of coastline is a paradise for anyone looking for dramatic views, friendly people and even awesome hotels. The 200 km long coast has been a favourite for those looking for world-class golf courses, record-breaking bungee jumps and delicious oysters.

Because this drive is parallel to Route 62, you can turn your road trip into a loop and drive on both of these incredible roads in one trip.

As amazing as these road trips promise to be, we haven’t even scratched the surface of the amazing places to see in the Western Cape. Have fun finding your own places and let us know what they are by using #MyCityStay when you post on social media. Have fun and drive safe.
