Whether you’re travelling abroad or embarking on a local adventure, there are some rules that everyone should stick to.

We understand that every once in a while, it’s exciting to rebel a bit, however, these travel rules exist to help keep travellers safe. They also help make sure your travels are less stressful.
Here’s our list of the three biggest travel no-no’s and what you should do to stay safe while travelling:

1) DON’T DISAPPEAR

Regardless of whether you’re heading off to a club or you’re joining your great aunt for tea at a nearby tea garden, tell someone where you’re going.
When travelling it is vital that you let someone know where you’re going and who you’re meeting up with. This way, if you get lost or need help, your hotel knows where to find you, and your family and friends can be made aware of your situation.
The sad truth is people go missing every day and when you’re in unfamiliar territory it’s better to be safe than sorry.

*Expert tip: If you’ve got a travel itinerary, share it with your hotel and a trusted friend.

2) DON’T FALL INTO TOURIST TRAPS

Most tourist activities, despite being expensive, are usually harmless. However, there are those who prey on tourists because they aren’t as well informed as locals.
We recommend speaking to locals and the staff at your hotel about what tourist activities are popular, safe and worthwhile. Locals are more likely to point you in the direction of good restaurants that are a little more cost effective or tell you about activities you may not have considered.

*Expert tip: Speak to your travel agent before your arrival to find out which activities you should look into before starting your travels.

3) DON’T FORGET TO MAKE BACKUPS

When travelling you should make certified copies of your ID, passport, visa and driver’s licence, in case something happens to the originals.
As we’ve mentioned before, there’s no escaping the reality that bad things happen and sometimes handbags, briefcases and luggage get stolen.
Having copies of the above mentioned documents means you’ll be able to file a police report as well as catch a flight and get home.

*Expert tip: Save copies of your certified documentation on Dropbox, Google Drive or the Cloud, so you have digital copies should you lose your physical copies.

Although there are many things that could go wrong while travelling, there are a thousand things that could go right too. You could discover a new favourite meal, learn something about a new culture, fall in love or discover a new passion. Like most things in life, travel has its highs and lows, we just want to make sure you’re safe while you’re on our journey.
