When visiting South Africa, big tourist attractions naturally draw people to them. In fact, the mention of South Africa tends to bring to mind activities like going on game drives – and there’s absolutely nothing wrong with that.

However, there are several other amazing attractions that local and foreign visitors forget about.

These attractions aren’t forgotten about because they are any less spectacular or interesting. They’ve just been forgotten about because our wonderful wildlife tends to steal the show. Here are some amazing and worthwhile tourist attractions that deserve the spotlight:

A TOURIST ATTRACTION THAT TAKES YOU UNDERGROUND:

The Cango Caves are a natural wonder that lies only 29km from the town of Oudtshoorn, Western Cape.  What makes these caves so spectacular is the variety of limestone formations. These formations divide the caves up into caverns and form art-like structures.

Did you know there are rocks that look like they’re dripping from the ceiling? These are one of the many intriguing rock formations that have formed over millions of years. Not to mention, our favourite attraction, the Crystal Palace, which has “hanging crystal gardens” on the cave walls.

If you’re feeling up to a bit of adventure, inquire about the adventure tours available. Otherwise, you and the family can enjoy a thrilling outing filled with mystery, history and a little bit of magic.

GET ABOVE SEA LEVEL WITH THIS TOURIST ATTRACTION:

Maclear’s Beacon isn’t just another attraction on the list of Table Mountain sites. This large cairn* is an amazing historical site worthy of being its own tourist attraction.

The Maclear’s Beacon isn’t just the highest point on Table Mountain, it is also a historically significant marker used to calculate the curvature of the earth’s surface in the 1830s.

Visiting Maclear’s Beacon requires a 45-minute walk from Table Mountain’s upper cable station, so we recommend taking comfortable walking shoes. Also, don’t forget your camera to snap a selfie 1,086 metres above sea level.

A TOURIST ATTRACTION THAT TAKES YOU BACK TO THE BEGINNING:

Just 90 minutes away from the busy city of Johannesburg, lies the bones and beginnings of mankind. That’s right, the Cradle of Humankind isn’t just a fancy name for a heritage site, it’s known as the world’s richest hominin* fossil site.

Did you know this site has been home to over 40% of the world’s human fossils? If you’re keen to visit this amazing heritage spot, we suggest you book a tour. What better way to find out about human development and history?

* Cairn – A mound of rough stones built as a memorial or landmark.

* Hominin – The group consisting of modern humans, extinct human species, and all our immediate ancestors.
