Let’s face it, family travel isn’t easy. Firstly, you’ve got to make sure you’ve packed enough for yourself and your kids. Secondly, you’ve got to pack half your first aid kit in case of an emergency, like a scraped knee or a cut finger.

As an adult, going on holiday can be as simple as booking into a City Lodge Hotel, packing your favourite book and going out for a drink to unwind. However, for most kids, none of these activities are even remotely entertaining or fun.

So, we’ve put together a list of things you can do during your family travels that will appeal to both you and your kids. Here’s our list of 4 activities that won’t bore your kids to tears:

1)      TAKE A BREAK, TAKE A BIKE RIDE

Kids these days don’t often have the opportunity to enjoy a good ole fashioned bike ride. Growing up, most of us had the wonderful experience of tearing down hills on our bicycles. We felt the fresh air on our faces and enjoyed the exhilarating feel of adrenaline pumping through our bodies.

So, why not introduce it to your kids as a family activity? We suggest getting a bit competitive and challenging your kids to see if they can out ride you.

If you’re not keen on carting your bicycles along with you while on holiday, or don’t own bicycles, we recommend hiring them for the day.

2)      TAKE SOME TIME TO MAKE A SPLASH

Swimming is always a great activity for the whole family. If you’re not a water lover then there are other things you can do with your kids near the safety of a dam water’s edge or sea shore.

Take a ball and play catch. You could also blow up a lilo swimming inflatable and let your kids pretend it’s a boat. Just remember to have fun and don’t forget the sunscreen!

3)      TAKE A WALK AMONG THE TREES

Get that blood pumping and breathe in some fresh air with a nature walk or a hike. South Africa is a 3475543_leditgorgeous country, what better way to experience and explore it than on foot?

From beginners to hiking enthusiasts, there are a number of nature trails and hiking routes that are rewarding and fun. Plus, it’s a great workout for you and the kids.

4)      TAKE A MOMENT TO LEARN

We understand that the last thing your kids and you want to do while on holiday is ‘learn,’ but learning can take place even when you’re having fun.

If you’re not a fan of zoos, try a more conservation friendly alternative – animal rescue and rehabilitation centres. Organisations like C.R.O.W in Kwa-Zulu Natal, C.A.R.E in Limpopo and samrec in Port Elizabeth allow visitors to learn about the animals they have saved and  are taking care of.

Due to these organisations strict rehabilitation and release programmes, they aren’t always open to the public. Phone the centre ahead of time and find out if you and your kids can spend the day learning about the wonderful wildlife found in South Africa.

When it comes to family travel, it’s important to remember that spending time with one another is the most important aspect of your holiday. Wondering why going on holiday as a family is so important these days? Then read our article “Why are family holidays important?” and find out.
