You’re going on a quick business trip next week, or you’re taking the kids to see Cape Town for the school holidays – the trip is already costing enough, do you really want to add insurance on top?
Yes. Yes you do.
Every trip should be taken on its own merits for what you should look for in your insurance, but imagine you have an accident and need to stay in hospital for a week, or your briefcase is stolen? These are the things that don’t happen often, but when they do, your insurance will be a lifesaver.
CHECK YOUR MEDICAL AID
If you are already on medical aid then you might assume you’re covered no matter where you go in South Africa. We suggest reading your fine print before boarding that plane – you want to be sure you are covered for your trip, how much and under what circumstances.
If you aren’t covered, then look into possible top up options on your current plan for the duration of your trip, or into stand-alone options that you can instate over your trip.
PAY BY CREDIT CARD
Most of South Africa’s major banks build in basic travel insurance into travel purchases. Before making a payment, look into what your bank offers you as a basic cover on your purchase and inquire as to top up options.
CHOOSE THE RIGHT AIRLINE
Worried about delays or cancellations costing you more than that missed meeting? When booking your ticket, check what travel insurance comes with it – some airlines will automatically offer travel insurance for their flights.
GO THROUGH A TRAVEL AGENT FOR ADDED ASSURANCE
Planning a family trip? Take one detail off your to-do list and go through a travel agent. They can cover every base for you, including the right insurance for your needs, and present you with one price to pay at the end of it all. You’ve probably already experienced this convenience in your business travel – so make it personal as well.
AT THE END OF THE DAY… READ THOSE TERMS AND CONDITIONS
No matter where the policy comes from, and no matter what you’re covering – make sure to take the time to read every word. You don’t want to be in a new place and only then discover that you aren’t covered for something you end up needing.
Look into any exclusions to the coverage and ask as many questions as you have to, to make sure that your individual medical and valuables needs are covered. After all, it’s what you’re paying for.
Travel insurance might seem like a bit of a grudge purchase, but it will give you that safety net to go and get the most out of your travels – without having to leave your new camera at home.
