A change in routine, like staying in a different city for a few nights, can knock any healthy living you’ve managed to follow off the ledge. But with a little bit of preparation, you can keep up the great work on your health while you keep up the good work out of town.
STEP 1: KEEP UP THE EXERCISE
At first glance it may seem difficult to keep up any sort of exercise routine while out on the road, especially if you have meetings and functions until all hours. But there are a couple of solutions at your disposal.
If you are a runner or walker at home then you’ll be itching to get out on that road and explore the area, so ask the front desk for the best routes and times to go out. If you’re more of a gym bunny then most hotels offer an on-site fitness room (we know we do!), or you can get your fitness on in the privacy of your own room with our top 5 hotel room exercises.
STEP 2: BE VOCAL
Traveling with a group of colleagues? It’s so much easier to be healthy when you’re honest about it from the start. You won’t be pestered into those rounds of drinks at the pub, or taken straight to the fattiest take away option at lunch – if your colleagues know you’re trying to be healthy then they will try to accommodate you more.
This works much the same as a gym buddy…when other people hold you accountable to the goals you’ve set, it’s easier to keep them. Instead of just having to give yourself any old excuse as to why you can binge tonight, you have to come up with a solid one for another person instead. That prospect makes it much easier to stick to your guns.
STEP 3: GIVE YOURSELF A BREAK
We know Step 2 said stick to your guns, but don’t forget to enjoy your travel. If you don’t travel on business often, then enjoy the experience and the foods that you won’t find at home. If you are a frequent flyer then don’t let yourself look back years from now and think “I went there all the time but I never truly experienced it”. Give yourself the full deal when you travel – just do it all in moderation.
You don’t have to overindulge to appreciate the experience – and remembering that will allow you to keep a healthy head on your shoulders as you go about your business (and explorations).
