We have exciting news: next year the City Lodge Hotel Group will start building its first ever hotel in Tanzania! The City Lodge branded hotel will have 147 rooms and is to be built in the vibrant capital city of Dar es Salaam, more specifically in the Ilala Municipal District. The development, which is subject to the issue of regulatory permits and approvals, is expected to cost around $22 million, with ground-breaking to take place in the first quarter of 2015. The Tanzania hotel is in keeping with our focus on entering (and winning over!) the East African hospitality market. We already have our Fairview Hotel in Nairobi, Kenya. And we are not limiting ourselves just to the east of the continent; there’s our recently acquired Town Lodge Hotel Gaborone in Botswana, and we are also investigating the building of hotels in Uganda, Rwanda, Namibia, Zambia, Mozambique and Mauritius! TWO…

One of the travel bloggers to heed our ‘City Escapes’ call was Kaveshan Chetty, online entrepreneur and founder of @RabbitMediaSA and @TheMagnifyingG. Kaveshan also spearheaded @iLuvEastLondon, and with a name like that we knew we had found the perfect ambassador for the seaside city of East London! So Road Lodge East London invited Kaveshan to be their guest for the weekend, and to use the time to enjoy being a tourist in his own city. Kaveshan later wrote: “24 Hours in East London with The City Lodge Hotel Group“, where he had the following to say: “My initial thoughts before writing this post was, “I NEED TO TELL PEOPLE HOW AWESOME EAST LONDON IS!” but I needed to stay grounded because you can’t really read a blog post with all CAPS.” We love Kaveshan’s enthusiasm! Let’s now look at the places in East London (EL) that earned a spot on his list of recommendations: WHEN…

We recently encouraged our readers to get out there and explore their own cities as a tourist would – to see the sights that we forget are just at our doorstep when we’re caught up in the humdrum continuum of ‘real life’… Based in Cape Town, but originally a PE local, Tamika Doubell jumped at the opportunity to rediscover the charms of Port Elizabeth (PE) and share her must-see and must-experience gems with other travellers or locals in need of a little inspiration! © Photo by Kevin Ruth Photography An entrepreneur, actress, model and blogger, Tamika launched into her #CityEscape with a stay at our Courtyard Hotel Port Elizabeth. We were thrilled to host Tamika, and always love hearing that our staff aimed to please. In Tamika’s words, “Friendly service with a team prepared to bend over backwards for you! They truly aimed to give me the best service and insight into the city’s tourist…

South Africa has an incredible amount to offer visitors, both local and international. And what most people don’t realise; is that nothing beats hitting the road for seeing South Africa in all its glory. A roadtrip in our beautiful country is so much more than highways, freeways and the final destination – the roadtrip is about the journey; the people and places you discover along the way; and the memories you make that are intrinsically tied to off-the-beaten-track locations you’d be hard-pressed to discover on any map. With 9 provinces to explore, and around 15 national routes as well as a few paths less travelled, no two roadtrip itineraries will ever be the same, whether planned or spontaneous, but you can be sure that a roadtrip through South Africa will feature high on your list of favourite holidays. South Africa is a vast expanse of road networks, and can be traversed as…

Many parents have to travel for work and must leave their kids behind at home. Here are three great travelling apps that will make life easier as well as ease your mind when you’re out of town. (Image via quirkbooks.com) 1. THE BABY OWNER’S DATA TRACKER This app by Quirk Productions records details of your baby, such as weight, height, sleeping patterns, and feeding schedules. One of the reasons it does this is to offer you a comparison to average percentiles, but the reason we think it a great app for the travelling parent is that all the info can easily be shared with friends or family, so if a mother needs to travel without her child, all the info she needs to pass on to the father, a relative, or babysitter are easily available via the app. The app also offers tips on topics such as feeding and sleep patterns.…

Often we choose to live in a city because we like it there – albeit the climate, scenery, culture, or something else that appeals to us – but then a few years in we get caught up in the humdrum of life and perhaps lose a bit of the original love we had for it, seeing fewer of the sights, and doing fewer of the unique activities available in that place. #CITYESCAPES IN YOUR TOWN So we think it’s time we all adopted a tourist mindset towards our own cities, and really start to embrace the positives about where we live. To help us do this, City Lodge Hotel Group has commissioned a bevy of travel bloggers to come and stay at our various hotels throughout the country and write about their experiences in each specific city! This means that over the next few months different writers will be tapping away at their keyboards…

There is no shortage of world-class MTB trails in South Africa – we can claim an almost greedy number! Any list of great rides is in a sense incomplete because it not only feels impossible to list them all but also new ones are being forged all the time. That said, here are a handful of routes that always crop up as favourites when you speak with mountain bikers; they’re a variety of the easy and ironman-ish, and we’re sure there’ll be more than one to inspire you into making some plans… THE CEDERBERG – A LUNAR ADVENTURE (Cederberg image via sportindustry.co.za) The Cederberg is one of South Africa’s true remaining wildernesses, a wonderful option for mountain bikers wanting to leave civilisation behind and immerse themselves in a multiday ride in the primal and at times lunar landscape of this corner of the country. The Cederberg, two hours NE of…

Living is learning, but some travel mistakes are so ubiquitous that we can and should learn from each other and so avoid them ourselves, especially as the consequences can be rather disastrous at worse, or sour your trip at best. So let’s have a rundown of the world’s most common traveller faux pas, with the idea that we all pay attention and commit ourselves to not becoming another stressed-out or harassed statistic. 1.     NOT PAYING ATTENTION TO FLIGHT DETAILS One of the worst examples of a flight snafu is the young German Tobi Gutt who didn’t study the details of his itinerary and instead of reaching his destination of Sydney, Australia, where his girlfriend awaited him, wound up bemused (and rather cold) in Sidney, Montana. (Image via 1cover.com.au) The point here is that you need to study your itinerary to ensure everything is in order. One of the more common…
